SAN PEDRO’S EASTVIEW LITTLE LEAGUE TO CELEBRATE ITS NEW HOME AT KNOLL HILL

San Pedro, CA: Less than one year after facing extinction, Eastview Little League in San Pedro will celebrate the completion of its new baseball complex during Opening Day ceremonies at 9:00AM on March 8, 2008.

Through the efforts of LA City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, the Port of Los Angeles, and scores of Eastview volunteers and donors, a temporary home for the league has been secured for the next three baseball seasons.During those three seasons, Eastview will work with the City of Los Angeles to establish a permanent home for the league.

Developed on land owned by the Port of Los Angeles, Eastview and the Port were able to transform San Pedro’s Knoll Hill into a temporary baseball facility featuring three fields, fully operational scoreboards, a concession stand, and plenty of parking and bleachers for families to watch the games.

“It’s amazing to see how much work has been completed in just five month’s time. These fields are beautiful, and they offer an amazing view. This community can be proud of what it has accomplished for its children. The kids are the real winners here,” said Eastview board president Ron Galosic.

Overlooking the Los Angeles Harbor’s scenic cruise and container terminals, and the landmark Vincent Thomas Bridge, the new fields will be home to 38 Little League teams and more than 550 children from the community.

To help mark the Opening Day occasion, Councilwoman Hahn, representatives from the Port of Los Angeles and Little League Baseball, and other community leaders will join the children of Eastview Little League in the celebration. The area’s two Major League Baseball teams will both be represented: the Los Angeles Dodgers by former 1st baseman Wes Parker (1964-1972); and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by former pitcher Dave Frost (1978-1981).

After the 2007 Little League season, Eastview was displaced from the fields that had been its home since 1961.The land on which more than 20,000 San Pedro children had learned to play baseball was demolished in order to develop a retail shopping complex.More than 10,000 signatures were obtained in a campaign to help ensure that the league would survive and operate at a new home in the area.
