NECESSARY INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES WANTING TO TEACH ENGLISH IN KOREA

The average salary at most Korean Schools ranges from 2.0 million won
to 2.5 million won ($ 2,150 USD to $2,680) per month. Some institutes
that look for very qualified and experienced teachers offer higher
salaries. Those who have no qualification and experience will get paid
around 2.0 million won ($2,150 USD). A reputable and reliable school
with low staff turnover would probably offer a lower salary than a
school that loses teachers frequently.

Most of all schools in Korea pay on a monthly basis. Generally, they
will pay on the 10th of each month. In this case, the money due to the
teacher for one full month of work will be paid on the 10th of the
following month.
One of the best parts is that the income taxes are very low, around
4%. Depending on where you live and what you do, you could save $1,000
~ $1,500 every month, while leading an enjoyable lifestyle, including
entertainment, shopping and traveling. Cost of living usually accounts
for 20~30 % of your income. If you teach in a large city, the cost of
living is a little higher than a smaller city due to diversion to
spending such as shopping and entertaining.

Also, at the end of the one-year contract, you receive an extra
month's regular salary. This severance pay of one-month full pay will
be paid upon the full completion of the 12-month contract period and
full discharge of the duties as per the Employment Agreement.

OVERTIME

Overtime pay varies from school to school depending on the times of
the year, the employer's desire for money, and the dependability of
co-workers. English Academies (Institutes), so called Hagwon in Korea
are the busiest in the August and January, the two months when public
schools are closed. During the two months, many Hagwons start special
educational programs and extra classes. As a result, working overtime
will be essential in August and January.

Yet, these special classes usually will be paid at the same rate as
other regular classes.
By working extra in the weekdays, you get paid slightly more than what
you are normally paid. However, working overtime on the weekends will
give you approximately 150% of the normal pay. For example, if you
receive 16,000 won per hour in a typical day of teaching, you would
receive around 24,000 won per hour while teaching overtime during the
weekends.

AIRFARE

The airfare to Korea will be paid by the school that hires you as a
part of their standard contract. The schools usually ask that you pay
for it in advance and then get reimbursed upon arrival. Flight
benefits will be spelled out in your contract in detail. After picking
a definite departure date, we strongly recommend that you allow us to
arrange your travel plan. We are better at coordinating your arrival
in Korea with the school and arranging your pickup at the airport. You
might face some unexpected complications when you arrange the flight
schedule on your own. So make sure you discuss with us regarding your
travel plan a way in advance.

HOUSING

All the teaching positions we offer include rent-free housing. Some
schools offer 2~3 bedroom apartments that you share with other foreign
teachers, while other schools will house you in your own studio
apartment. In the past, a group of teachers lived in one apartment
with their own private bedroom sharing same living space (kitchen,
bathroom, living room, etc). Current trend is giving one studio per
teacher. The size of the studio will be small but it is clean and
convenient for you. It has a kitchen, bathroom, closet, sofa, bed,
television, VCR or DVD player, refrigerator, laundry machine, heater
and air conditioning unit. High speed Internet is also available if
you bring your own laptop. (High speed Internet will be installed in a
few days when ordered by phone)Korea is the most advanced Internet
service providing nation in the world.

As far as utility, in some cases schools pay all or half of the
utility. Some schools just give you a set amount every month for you
to use. However, generally, the employee will be responsible to pay
the costs of utilities for the apartment. For a small studio, the
utility usually runs around $40~ $100 USD depending on the season.
You will likely be housed within the walking distance from the school.
In rare cases are placed at some distance from the school, there will
be a shuttle bus provided by the school.

TAX

From your monthly salary, there will be a withholding of income tax
(4-5%), resident tax (10% of income tax, i.e. a couple of dollars),
national pension contribution (4.5%) and national health insurance
premiums (2.1%). Korean National Pension Corporation has an agreement
with U.S. to have all of your national pension contribution plus your
employer's contribution be refunded to you when you leave Korea
permanently.

MEDICAL INSURANCE

Korea has a comprehensive national health plan. You will be paying for
the national health insurance premiums along with your employer. It is
a comprehensive insurance that includes hospitalization and medicine.
In case a school offers a private health insurance to you, although
you will not pay a monthly insurance premium, you will pay higher
co-payment. Be advised that you will not be covered by any insurance
prior to your residency has been processed and that might take up to
2-4 weeks after arrival. It is advised to purchase a travel insurance
for a nominal fee with medical coverage for at least a month following
arrival in Korea.

SICK DAYS

The contract will specify how many paid sick days you will have. If
you are sick, don't go to work. But please don't abuse the sick days,
since your co-workers would have to bear the burden. If you use more
than specified number of sick days, your employer will deduct a day's
salary.

RESIGNATION

You have the right to leave Korea anytime you want. But read the
contract carefully before deciding to leave the school. Schools invest
a lot of money in hiring a teacher overseas and they have the right to
enforce the contract if you leave early. Most of the time the penalty
will be the loss of the severance pay, loss of airfare back to U.S.
and sometimes they will withhold some of your salary. So, try to
complete your contract term. In case you are having problems at the
school, let us know in advance. We will try to mediate the situation
between you and your school.

NATIONAL HOLIDAYS

All schools close for Korean national holidays, 10-13 days a year, and
close for a week in summer and a week at the end of the year. Your
contract will specify how many holidays and vacation days you will
have with pay.
January 1 New Year's Holiday
February Lunar New Year (Seollal). Businesses closed for 3-5 working days.
March 1 Independence Movement Day (Samiljeol).
April 5 Arbor Day (Singmogil).
May 5 Children's Day (Eorininal).
Mid-May Buddha's Birthday (Seokga Tnasinil)
June 6 Memorial Day (Hyeonchungil).
July 17 Constitution Day (Jeheonjeol)
August 15 Liberation Day (Gwangbokjeol)
September Chuseok, harvest festival; the Korean equivalent of the
American Thanksgiving festival. Takes place on the 15th day of the 8th
lunar month.
October 3 National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol).
December 25 Christmas Day
